Type II diabetes rapidly on the rise in Canada. Statistics Canada suggests that as many as 1.3 million Canadians are affected by diabetes, and many of them are unaware of this condition. Diabetes is a chronic condition where blood sugar regulation in the body is impaired either because the body is not producing insulin, or that it is responding to insulin incorrectly. Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas, which enables the body to use dietary sugar as an energy source. A compromise in the pancreas’ ability to produce insulin, or in other body cells to respond to insulin leads to elevated blood sugar levels. Over time, this puts us at risk for the many complications of diabetes, including nerve damage, vision problems, skin ulcers, erectile dysfunction and kidney and heart disease.
